About Lake Kensington Nature Park

Lake Kensington Nature Park is a 115-acre property recently acquired by the City of Kyle. Set within the Texas Blackland Prairie ecoregion, the region is characterized by the tallgrass prairie it once supported, rich dark soil, and diverse plant and wildlife habitats that make it a natural treasure worth protecting. The site is surrounded by neighborhoods, schools, and healthcare facilities, positioning it to become a vital community resource for both recreation and conservation.

At the heart of the property is Lake Kensington itself, a 23-acre Soil Conservation Service reservoir originally built to manage flood control, water storage, and erosion prevention. While it continues to serve this important function, the lake and surrounding landscape also offer unique opportunities for recreation, education, and conservation.

The master plan process will help determine how best to balance these opportunities. Early recommendations, included in the 2025 PROS Plan, suggest classifying the property as an undeveloped open space until it is fully developed, ensuring that planning decisions are rooted in ecological protection and community input. Ideas under consideration include:

  • Expanding trail networks with safe connections to Seton Park and nearby neighborhoods.
  • Introducing water-based recreation that complements, rather than duplicates, nearby lakes.
  • Designing amenities that serve both the local community and the broader region.
  • Protecting existing trees and habitats while carefully integrating new features.
  • Providing spaces for both active play and quiet enjoyment of nature.

Above all, the vision for Lake Kensington Nature Park is to create a place that balances people and nature. The park has the potential to address gaps in the city’s recreation system, strengthen connections between neighborhoods, and offer experiences that can’t be found anywhere else in Kyle. With careful planning and robust public engagement, Lake Kensington will become a cornerstone of the community for generations to come.
